Two of my favorite smart people on the Harry Reid/Negro dialect/racism flap:
You see, good liberals occasionally slip in their parlance due to stress or by accident, and to no real worry; bad conservatives like a Lott or George Allen give valuable windows on their foul souls when they similarly lapse into insensitive speech. – Victor Davis Hanson
Republicans are right, so right, that if Mitch McConnell had said what Reid said, there would be a prolonged scandal. And they are right that political differences should not be turned radioactive by the malicious charge of racism. But it’s enough to point this out. Don’t join in. – Mona Charen
The double standard is there, and if you don’t see it, you are delusional.
However, I tend to think Mona Charen is right. Point it out and move on. That a bunch of idiot Democrats would be calling for a Republican’s head under similar circumstances—and might well get it—doesn’t make it all right to do the reverse. I want Reid unemployed because he’s destroying the country with his politics, not because he’s a “racist.”
Note the hypocrisy, decline to play, and move on.
