Yeah, I didn’t know anything about her either.

As I’ve had a minute here and there to learn more today, I’ve become more and more impressed with McCain’s selection of Alaska’s current governor as his running mate.  She’s a smart bomb.  As a gun-toting pro-lifer, she’ll quell a lot of social conservative unrest.  As a governor, she can legitimately claim more executive experience than either Obama or Biden.  As a fiscal conservative, she is brutal and unyielding.

And hey, those three electoral votes in Alaska are in the tank, baybee.  (Like they weren’t already.)

By the way, you may have noticed that Sarah Palin is a woman.  Quoting an email on NRO’s Campaign Spot blog:

“The Democratic National Convention was a woman-palooza.  Hillary’s speech celebrated women’s progress. Michelle’s speech celebrated Hillary shattering the glass ceiling.  Talk talk talk.  Guess which party has a woman on the ticket.”

I think this is a political master stroke.

    1. I just read a (very liberal) review of Palin burning on her for lack of experience. Call me crazy, but I don’t think a lot of people see Obama as having tons of experience, either. So, I found that argument kind of dumb. I hope they get off that one quickly. Otherwise, I think it sure has made this race more interesting! The political stratigists seem to be working over-time for both parties.

    2. Lea, you’re exactly right. The most effective deflection against squawks of “inexperience!” that she has is a head-to-head comparison with Obama’s record. They’re remarkably similar, except that Palin has actually run something.

(Obama’s got foreign policy experience because he lived in Indonesia until he was 10? because he played basketball in Afghanistan a month ago?)

Her nickname is Sarah Barracuda, by the way. She seems to have built a reputation for directness and low tolerance for gasbaggery. Given his penchant for bloviation, I have a feeling she’s going to take Biden apart in their debate.

    3. If she’s as strong a fiscal conservative as is claimed, well, that’s a refreshing viewpoint for either party these days. And it speaks well for her. But she’s also a “teach the controversy” creationist who wants creationism taught in public schools – in science class. That doesn’t speak well for her. Relevant because being a creationist is a pretty reliable marker for holding other kooky ideas. Burden’s on her to show me otherwise.

    4. Unclaimed: Yeah, I saw that (the creation “science” support), and I don’t like it either. However, she’s also been quoted as saying “Creationism doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.” So perhaps she wishes it were so, but understands the lack of actual leverage for such.

    5. I’m pretty wary of that Creationism stuff, too. But, boy, this sure got interesting in a hurry! No matter what, the election will put a “first” into office.

Did you hear that sound? It’s the ERs collapsing from the rush of all them good ole boys having heart attacks.

    6. Now we know for sure that Ms.Palin is raising good looking, heterosexual children-at least the 17 yr old daughter.
      Sorry for the cheap shot.

    7. Dad: Cheap shot or not, the people to whom such a fact is particularly important are a political reality, and they’re all over the spectrum. No one, Republican, Democrat, or other, is going to win a presidential election with a sincere what’s-the-big-deal attitude toward gay people, or supporting same-sex marriage, or whatever.

I don’t expect real leadership from any federal politician on the gay community anytime soon.
