This August 29 announcement on the Bungie site confirms it.
So it seems the development delay has become impossible, which is excellent news. (Manufacturing and distribution delays could still occur, of course, but it’s much easier to forecast a relief date for those.)
Bungie has called Halo 3 “the conclusion of this story arc.” That sounds to me like resolution of the current narrative, but with the door open for future Halo games. Perfect!
I’ve been playing video games for 30 years (which is close to as long as you can have been playing them), and Halo and Halo 2 remain my all-time favorites. It’s a rich, fastidiously developed science fiction epic, married to the best video game combat action ever. They are just beautifully done, and I’m very much looking forward to finishing the story in glorious high-definition.

If you like science fiction, video games, or both, and you’ve somehow missed out on the Halo games, it’s not too late. Go fix it. The Xbox 360, Halo, and Halo 2 are $388.97, plus tax. Get hooked up by tomorrow, and you’ll have three weeks to finish both games before the arrival of Halo 3 ($59.99) on September 25.
That should be plenty of time if you take a little bit of vacation and let the lawn go.
