Unfortunately, I have an addition to my fledgling collection of favorite discontinued potables. A bottle of Olde Towne Bock has joined my can of still oft-missed old Diet Mountain Dew.

Olde Towne Brewing Company, Alabama’s only dedicated microbrewery and the first in the Huntsville area since 1915, burned early yesterday morning. No human injuries, so that’s good news, but the entire facility is lost. Hops the cat is missing, but hasn’t been found inside the ruins, so hopefully he escaped and will turn up.

Owner Don Alan Hankins (pictured) says he’d like to rebuild, and I hope he does, but I’m saving one just in case.

It was nice beer. The pale and amber varieties were pretty good, but I really liked the Hefeweizen and bock varieties. Lea considerately bought me a six-pack yesterday, and witnessed one fellow with about two cases in his cart. Let the hoarding begin.

Draft is available in a dozen or so places around town, too. Maybe tomorrow won’t be too late for me to get out and have one more.

Good luck, Mr. Hankins. I certainly will miss Olde Towne at Big Spring Jam this year.

    1. I overheard the “hoarding beer guy” on his cell phone tell somebody what he was buying and giving them instructions to go check out another grocery store. I was surprised to find any left. I don’t know whether he just got the ones off the shelf and forgot to look in the cooler or what.

Glad I happened to find it for you, though…

    2. Ah… Hefeweizen is an underappreciated beer style, at least amongst my cohorts. I hope he can rebuild and that they find the kitty.

    3. Jeremy, I’m with you. I don’t drink it as often as some other styles, but when the mood hits a good Hefeweizen is a thoroughly satisfying experience.
