Stuart Hill owns Forvik, an island of 2.5 acres off Scotland. On Saturday, citing a 15th-century dowry arrangement between the Norwegian and Scottish kings of the time, he declared independence from the United Kingdom. He plans to issue his own currency, print his own stamps, and raise his own flag (shown). “Forvik owes no allegiance to any United Kingdom government, central or local, and is not bound by any of its statutes,” he wrote on his web site.

Call it romantic, silly, delusional, or whatever, but I carry a little baseline sadness that such isn’t really possible anymore. We have international agreements for everything and everywhere.

I suspect what will happen here is that the United Kingdom will stop short of recognizing Forvik, but will leave Hill alone. We’re talking about a 65-year-old guy who lives in a tent on the beach, so it would seem to be a self-limiting “problem” (though he’s actively soliciting residents).

However, I’d be curious to see what happened if he started clearing lots of money from a book, or decided to devote 2.25 acres of the island to growing a potent marijuana strain.

My friend Mark stopped by my office this afternoon to chat for a minute, which generally means we’re going to talk about the things you’re not supposed to talk about (religion and politics).  Our respective mosaics have fabulously stimulating similarities and differences, and it’s rare that I come away from a conversation with him without pleasurably ruminating on something.  I value access to his views highly.

In and amongst graver topics, he dropped a new-to-me site in the conversation today, and I’m really digging the hell out of it.  Do you like music?  Ever been to Pandora.com?  Go now, and get some music going. It take 15 seconds.  (Eventually you have to register, but you can use it enough to get a feel for it without doing so.)

The concept is that you put in a song title or artist, and it creates a stream of high-quality music that begins immediately, based on the Music Genome Project.  I’m loving it, and I expect it’ll become a great way for me to explore new artists.  (I’m excited about using the Xbox 360 to get it to the nice speakers in the living room at our next get-together, too!)

It seems Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign is in the hole to the tune of $20 million.

Oh, dear.

What can you do?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  Click here to watch her beg make an impassioned plea for the future of our nation, as well as make a contribution.  We already know that it takes a village to raise the children of Hillaryland.  Apparently it also takes one to escape the financial aftermath of seventeen months of wanton hubris.

By the way, Bill and Hillary reported a total of $109 million in income from 2000 to 2007.

George Carlin died of heart failure yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 71.

I had a fever the only night I ever had a ticket to see him live.  Guess I’ll have to wait a while longer now.

This is a great loss for all lovers of language, as well as anyone who enjoys the skillful aggravation of the too-tightly-wound. I think we shall never again see his like. Thank goodness he was prolific.

RIP.

Hat tip, Dorothy.
